GNP: DAY 8 - Company session - Starbucks Coffee Japan, at Academyhills
On Feb 22, the day 8 of Global Network Project 2017, the students from Hitotsubashi ICS and UBC Sauder had a valuable dialog session with Toru Kitagawa, CFO, Starbucks Coffee Japan, at Academyhills Auditorium, Roppongi Hills.
In 2015, Starbucks Coffee Company successfully completed a TOB (takeover bid) of the 60% shares of Starbucks Coffee Japan. It did not own for around $1 billion and made it a wholly-owned subsidiary. Uniquely, Starbucks entered Japan in 1995 as a joint venture with Sazaby League, a Japanese retailer. Subsequently, this joint venture (Starbucks Coffee Japan) listed its shares on a domestic stock exchange in 2001. Until the TOB its shares were actively traded on the JASDAQ stock exchange. Mr. Kitagawa talked about the reasons for the TOB and the future prospects of Starbucks Japan now that it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of a global firm.
